What is Essence?

What comes to mind when you hear the word essence? For me, I think of it as the part of someone that makes them uniquely them; some call it the True Self. That part of you that is connected to something greater than yourself. The pureness of heart, the golden nugget that lies within all living things and yearns to shine brightly. We are all born with this essence. And it never waivers.

But as life happens, and events change us, that essence can become a bit quieter, reside a bit deeper in our hearts. Sometimes we lose sight of our true nature and our essence can be forgotten. Connection and authenticity are two things that can help us find essence in others and ourselves. It has been my life's journey to find, know and uphold my own essence, through discovery of self, spirituality, relationship and now, through art and photography.

It is of utmost importance for me to take great care and honour when photographing my clients and discovering that beautiful essence. Each session is a new and exciting journey for me, and I love watching it unfold behind my lens and before my eyes.

This is what we all want to freeze in time and hold onto. Capturing essence in art is a gift that can be treasured always, for generations to come. When we look at our photographs, we are reminded of that golden nugget – be it those precious first days of life, those loving family moments: the days we want to squeeze onto and never forget.
